Parts of a plant and what they do

A flowering plant has two main systems. The root system grows underground: roots hold the plant firmly in the soil and take in water and minerals. The shoot system grows above the ground. The stem holds the plant up and carries water up from the roots and food around the plant. Leaves make food by photosynthesis, using sunlight. Buds grow into new leaves or flowers. Flowers make seeds, and a fruit grows around the seeds to protect them and help them spread.
