Parts of a plant and what they do
Label the root, stem, leaf, flower, bud and fruit on a flowering plant, and find out the job each part does.
Core concept
In short: Learn the job of each part of a plant: roots, stem, leaves, flowers and fruits.
Each part of a flowering plant has a job: roots take in water, the stem carries it, leaves make food, flowers make seeds, and fruits protect and spread them
Topic: Plants
A flowering plant has two main systems. The root system grows underground: roots hold the plant firmly in the soil and take in water and minerals. The shoot system grows above the ground. The stem holds the plant up and carries water up from the roots and food around the plant. Leaves make food by photosynthesis: How green plants make their own food from light, water and carbon dioxide. All key words, using sunlight. Buds grow into new leaves or flowers. Flowers make seeds, and a fruit grows around the seeds to protect them and help them spread.
