The human urinary system

Label the kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra and the blood vessels of a model of the human urinary system, and follow how urine is made and removed.

Core concept

The kidneys filter waste such as urea from the blood to make urine, which flows down the ureters to the bladder and leaves through the urethra

Topic: Human body

Excretion is the removal of waste made by the body's cell: The tiny building block that every living thing is made of. All key words. The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs at the back of the abdomen. Blood carrying waste, such as urea from broken-down protein: A nutrient for growth and repair, found in beans, eggs, milk and meat. All key words, reaches each kidney through a renal artery from the aorta. Millions of tiny filtering units called nephrons remove the urea, extra salts and extra water, forming urine, and the cleaned blood returns through a renal vein to the vena cava. Urine flows down a tube called the ureter from each kidney to the bladder, which stores it until it leaves the body through the urethra.
