Which body system is it?

Find sixteen organs on the body, read what each one does, and sort them into the digestive, respiratory, circulatory, nervous, excretory and skeletal systems.

Core concept

Organs that work together to do one big job form a body system, such as the digestive system, which breaks down food

Topic: Human body

Our body is made of cell: The tiny building block that every living thing is made of. All key words, cells form tissues, and tissues form organs such as the heart and the stomach. Organs that work together to do one big job form a body system. The digestive system breaks down our food. The respiratory system takes in oxygen: A gas in the air that living things need to breathe and that fire needs to burn. All key words and gets rid of carbon dioxide: A gas we breathe out. Plants take it in to make their food. All key words. The circulatory system carries blood round the body. The nervous system controls everything we do and feel. The excretory system removes waste from the blood. The skeletal system holds us up and protects our soft organs. In this lab you find each organ on the body and work out which system it belongs to.

Key words explained

What you will learn

  • Name the main organs of the human body and say where they are.
  • Describe the job of each organ.
  • Group organs into the digestive, respiratory, circulatory, nervous, excretory and skeletal systems.
  • Explain that the systems of the body work together.

Before you start

  • Know that the body is made of parts that do different jobs.

Materials

  • A chart or model of the human body

Equipment

  • A stethoscope, to listen to the heart and lungs (if your school has one)

Procedure

  1. Pick an organ card and find out where it is and what it does.
  2. Do this for at least eight organs.
  3. Sort every organ into its body system.
